Emmaus School Uganda
We are excited to tell you about SPU's sister school, Emmaus School in Uganda.
The Story
Emmaus School (located in the village of Kizigo, Uganda) started in February 2016 and was founded by the Horn Family (Geoff Horn is our Tech guy here at SPU) in support of Moses Muwanguzi (Omuto Uganda NGO), a Ugandan who was raised in the village of Kizigo and had a dream of building a school in his home village.
Cross-Cultural Connection | Pen Pals
In 2017-2018, we began writing Pen Pal letters between students in Mrs. Zdunich's 5th grade class at SPU and the 5th graders at Emmaus School in Uganda. Mr. Horn would take the letters to Uganda and bring the replies back. Students at SPU and Emmaus get to see pictures and videos of what life is like at their sister school on the other side of the world. We learn about the challenges we each face, we learn about favorite games & favorite foods, we learn about each other's families and share our hopes and dreams about the future. It's shown us the importance of learning, hard work, but mostly, we learn the value of connection. Hearts and minds that are much the same.
Since that first year, our Pen Pal program has expanded to multiple grades ranging from 1st all the way to 8th grades. Currently, every student from 4th-8th grade at SPU has the opportunity to be a Pen Pal with someone at Emmaus School. We've even had some SPU teachers travel to Uganda to visit the school and teach in various classes! Mrs. Z and her family visited Uganda in June 2019 and Mr. Timpe in July 2024. Ms. Cutchin will be visiting Emmaus School in June 2025! Let Mr. Horn know if your family is ever interested in a trip to visit Emmaus School...along with an African safari!
