General Questions

QUESTION: What is an interdistrict transfer?

ANSWER: An interdistrict transfer is when a student transfers from their district of residence to a different one, usually requiring approval from both the home and the receiving districts.

QUESTION: Who needs an interdistrict transfer?

ANSWER: Students who wish to attend a school outside of their district of residence.

Application Process

QUESTION:  How do I apply for an interdistrict transfer?

ANSWER: First, submit a formal request using this form: to be release from your district of residence.

Once notified that you have been released from your district of residence, please call us at 760-745-4931 to let us know that you have been released. 

QUESTION: When should I apply for an interdistrict transfer?

ANSWER: Application deadlines vary but usually open up around March 1st.  It's best to apply as early as possible, preferably several months before the start of the school year.

QUESTION: Is there a fee for applying for an interdistrict transfer?

ANSWER: No. 

Approval and Decision

QUESTION: Who approves the interdistrict transfer request?

ANSWER: Both the home and receiving districts must approve the transfer. The district of residence must release the student AND the receiving district must accept them.

QUESTION: What factors influence the approval of an interdistrict transfer?

ANSWER: Factors include space availability in district programs, the reason for the transfer,, and specific district policies.

QUESTION: How long does the approval process take?

ANSWER: The timeline can vary, but it generally takes several weeks to a couple of months.

TIMELINE:

  • The districts involved will notify the parent/guardian by email or U.S. mail of the decision within the timeframes specified herein.

  • Education Code 46601 provides the following timeframes for notification:

    1. For requests submitted during the regular school year, districts shall respond within 30 days of submitting the request.

    2. For requests submitted for admission in the subsequent school year up to 30 days prior to the start of the subsequent regular school year, districts shall respond within 14 calendar days after the start of the school year.

  • While your application is pending, the student must attend school in the district of residence, a charter school, a private school, or other option complying with California compulsory education requirement

  • The failure of a parent/guardian to meet any timelines established by the school district shall be deemed an abandonment of the request. [Ed Code 46600.2]

  • If an Interdistrict Attendance Permit is denied, a parent/guardian has the right to appeal, in writing,  within 30 days of the denial. If all district appeals are denied, a parent has 30 calendar days to appeal to the County Board of Education

QUESTION: Can a transfer request be denied?

ANSWER: Yes, transfers can be denied based on space availability, failure to meet application criteria, or other district-specific policies.

After Approval

QUESTION: What happens if my transfer is approved?

ANSWER: You will receive information about enrollment procedures, including registering at SPU, submitting additional paperwork, and meeting specific deadlines.

QUESTION: Do I need to reapply for an interdistrict transfer each year?

ANSWER: No.

QUESTION: Can an approved transfer be revoked?

ANSWER: Yes, under certain circumstances, such as poor academic performance, behavioral or attendance issues, or changes in residency or program availability.

QUESTION: Do interdistrict transfers affect funding for the schools?

ANSWER: Yes, funding can be affected as it is primarily  based on student enrollment numbers.

QUESTION: Can I appeal a denied transfer request?

ANSWER: Yes, most districts have an appeal process, which may involve submitting additional documentation or attending a hearing.
